Azuline Falls: The Shelves of Arlath by XianPryde Azuline Falls: The Shelves of Arlath by XianPryde
This map was the winning entry for the August 2014 monthly challenge over at cartographersguild.com

The challenge: take an existing image or photograph and then map that location, including all the areas around that cannot be seen in the image itself. Thus, you are to imagine and create the parts of the location that are "around the bend" from what you can see in the original image.

I chose a photo of an interesting double waterfall with a footbridge in between, somewhere in a mountainous and forested setting. I kept myself in the dark as to where the location was, and created everything you see here based solely on the photograph itself (I have since learned where it is, and now I'd like to go there!). I did some bootstrapping measurements and back-of-the-envelope calculations to set the dimensions, created an overhead layout in Adobe Illustrator, then drew just about everything you see by hand, digitally in ProCreate on the iPad. I use an Adonit Jot Touch stylus. The final step was to bring the map into Photoshop for the application of labels and text elements.

I am searching for an illustration of a fantasy map something like this with the added dimension.  If you are interested in hearing about this project you can reach me at bob@vanguardmanagementgroup.com or call 813-930-8036.308 (leave message if I do not pick up).  Excellent depth and dimension.

If you are not interested and you know of some others able to provide similar dimension, I would appreciate a link or contact info.  Thank you, bob

Sounds like a pretty cool contest. Do you plan to post a B&W version as well? I could see your line art really standing by itself as well.

I could certainly post a black and white version. I usually keep the line art completely separate from the colors, as you can tell.

It's a good map :) and a well-earned compass. What is the location of the waterfall you used?

I didn't know it until after I'd drawn the map, but it's Multnomah Falls near Portland, Oregon.

Cool. It's fun seeing what happened with your version and then looking at the other place.

Thank you. I'm crazy about isometric perspective maps and how much more "real" they feel than top-down ones.
