Mikscifonia: The Smaller Island by XianPryde Mikscifonia: The Smaller Island by XianPryde
This was created as part of a challenge at CartographersGuild.com. The idea was to team up with another cartographer on the site and submit a request to them. The request I got was to create an island that could be many sizes, anywhere from tiny to continent, and have that work (somehow). There was also a mention of unusual directions, I believe--something beyond the normal compass rose. The fancy compass here allows for three simultaneous directions of reckoning, based on three separate phenomena.

I created a pair of maps, one of which you see here, and an animated GIF that would blend the two together. This is the smaller island, while the larger one takes the same shape at a much greater scale.

As with most of my work, this was primarily created on an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil, in the fantastic app Procreate. I will then normally bring the image into Photoshop to add the textual elements.

Hey.. like the isometric view... although the uniform land height bugs me... I see how you are doing the stepped beaches in places to compensate but to the eye it still seems odd (my eye at least...)..  I suppose its how things like the lake (*7) empties into the sea in what looks like a massive waterfall..  Not sure if I could suggest a constructive solution though... perhaps something as simple as not being so high might be all it needs... ?  Great work either way...

Yeah, it's a bit of a flat platter. I did some stepping, and some sloping, here and there, but it would look more like a natural island if it wasn't mostly sharp cliffs everywhere. It comes from the technique I use to map out the island from above first, then make it isometric. I just need to develop my technique a bit more when it comes to that translation step.

Sounds like you have it all worked out... its definitely a nice style (always liked iso drawings) for cartography and I look forward to seeing your future work...

If you like the style, you might want to check out my Azuline Falls map, which I was able to give more attention to.
