The Valley of Blood and Gold by XianPryde The Valley of Blood and Gold by XianPryde
This is the finished map related to this GIF comparison: ( xianpryde.deviantart.com/art/F… )

It was runner-up in the June 2014 challenge on cartographersguild.com

I worked out a number of refinements to my techniques in producing this map. It was a great experience. All of the artwork was produced in ProCreate on an iPad 3 with the Adonit Touch Stylus. The text labels were laid in with Photoshop.

Grab it and look closely: there's a lot of detail in there. Download it and use it for your fantasy campaign! Order a print!

[ I'm noticing a distinct lack of BORDERS on my maps. I think I need to work on my bordering skills. Marginalia. Framing. Encapsulation. Etc. ]

A good frame makes a lot of difference. I like to play with different textures under a baseline of bevel and emboss layers. Adding an etched inscription can be pretty neat, too.

Your technique is coming along nicely, by the way. Especially the mountains and mountain lakes. Well done!

Thanks, LeDaverix. The rivers think is second-nature to me...after staring at National Geographic maps, Google Earth, Apple Maps, and all the rest for years and years, I'm always thinking about where the water is flowing and pooling. I didn't realize how many people draw silly rivers until I learned that the Cartographer's Guild has a whole group of people called the "River Police" who will smack you down for unrealistic forking.

River Police? :D
... i hear this the first time.. awsome. But i think necessary. ... i saw allready to many maps... also really good maps, wit a lot of efford and artskill in it..  with random Splitting rivers, rivers running through mountainchains (as if they werent there) , and my favourite :  rivers running out of a ocean and flowing back into it, .. aditionally splitting somehere and running elsewhere in the ocean :D

there is a cartographers guild? .. do you have a link? :)

Yes, indeed--River Police.

However, in defense of certain people, I should point out that there ARE indeed rivers that run right through mountain ranges. The Danube is one, and there are many others. Typically, the uplift of the range will "trap" an existing river, cutting it off from the sea and causing it to pool up in a great lake. Most of Hungary was once a shallow inland sea, and is now plains. Of course, the water eventually builds to a level where it can flow through the mountains by taking a pass. Then the pass is swiftly eroded into a canyon by the rushing waters, until the inland lake/sea is gone and the river seems to have just sliced its way through the mountains as they rose up.

There was also a great lake filling most of California, where I live, because the coastal range of mountains had cut off the flow of the Sacramento River. There is now a straight called the Carquinez that punches through from the central valley to San Francisco Bay and allows the river to flow to the sea.

The cartographer's guild is here, and I post under the name "xpian" : www.cartographersguild.com

Oh come on, dude! This is an awesome map and you had to use an out-of-place raise/emboss/Photoshop-filter on the title.  :(  Apart from that, it's an amazing map and I love it.

You're totally right about the layer fx for the main title, watermonster. If I'd had just a little more time, I would have done the title exactly like the compass rose--"gold" with hand-stippling. Unfortunately, I'd been working on the map all month and the contest was coming down to the wire. I had to just put it out there. I know it clashes a little. Maybe I'll fix it up when I have time. :-)

That moment when your ringtone is the Game of Thrones theme and it plays while looking at this map

I love the closeups of the major sections of the world, like the forest and mountains. It gives the world much more depth than just the generic geopgraphy. And your were right; the detail put into it is incredible

Thanks for the compliments.

This has been my ringtone for a very long time: media.libsyn.com/media/themerl…
It's not a fantasy theme, but it's unmistakable. It's from a podcast called "You Look Nice Today."

This map is amazing. The way you are managing mountains, rivers and forest is excellent, that's the kind of work to be proud of.
I also really like you compass ; the way you made it looking like a spinning arrow is both inventive and great. =)

Oh and by the way ; I saw the .gif version that shows the re-do work you put on that one but the link in your description seems to be broken ; it took the ")" as a part of the it, you may like to correct that. ;)
